Between the Stars: A Cinematic Captain’s Odyssey in Deep Space

If you’ve ever wanted to step onto the bridge of a massive starship and make the hard calls that determine the fate of your crew, Between the Stars is designed for you. Mixing Action-RPG elements with a Roguelike structure, it offers a gritty, story-driven perspective on space combat that is as beautiful as it is brutal.

A Tale of Two Captains

The game kicks off with one of the most immersive prologues in the genre. You start in command of a top-tier vessel during a high-stakes rebellion that—without spoiling too much—doesn’t end well. This sets the stage for the actual gameplay, where you step into the shoes of a new captain. The narrative transition is seamless, immediately grounding you in a universe of warring factions and political intrigue.

Gameplay: Managing the Heart of the Ship

Combat in Between the Stars isn’t just about “point and shoot.” It’s about Resource Management. Your crew can redirect power in real-time between three vital systems:

  • Engines: Crucial for positioning or escaping a losing fight.
  • Shields: Necessary when the enemy has you in their sights.
  • Weaponry: The obvious choice when you have the tactical advantage.

A standout mechanic is the Intel System. To deal serious damage, you must lock onto an enemy ship to scan for weak points (Front, Middle, or Back). Once revealed, focusing your fire on these vulnerabilities is the only way to take down the larger, more intimidating capital ships.

Progression and the “Wall”

The progression curve is steep. Moving out of your starting ship takes significant effort, but once you hit the “sweet spot” in the mid-game, your wealth and power tend to skyrocket. By the time you reach the current campaign’s end, you’ll likely feel unstoppable.

However, be warned: the game is Progressive. As you advance through the story, the sectors themselves become more dangerous. Enemies hit harder, and the requirements to survive grow, making your crew’s skills—which can be lost permanently—your most valuable asset.

Technical Fidelity and Customization

Visually, the game is a feast for the eyes, though it is demanding. To enjoy the stars in high definition, you’ll need a solid GPU. That said, it is well-optimized; even on a mid-range GTX 1050ti, you can maintain a stable 60 FPS on Medium settings. The inclusion of a “Photo Mode” that hides the HUD is a welcome touch for those who want to capture the scale of the cosmic environments.

While the ship customization is deep, the Character Creator is currently a bit thin. The 3D models and hairstyles feel slightly dated compared to the gorgeous ship designs, though the starting “Perks” and “Flaws” system adds a nice layer of Roguelike unpredictability to each run.

The Verdict

ProsCons
Cinematic Atmosphere: Fantastic voice acting and a gripping prologue.Early Access Roughness: Some grammar mistakes and minor bugs.
Tactical Combat: Redirecting power and scanning weak points feels rewarding.Pacing Issues: Travel can feel slow without a better fast-travel system.
Responsive Devs: Extremely active developers who fix bugs within 24 hours.Narrative Gap: The main campaign is still awaiting its final chapters.

Final Thoughts: Between the Stars is a successful Kickstarter story that is living up to its promises. It requires a decent PC and a bit of patience for the “Early Access” edges, but the core experience is one of the most atmospheric space sims on Steam. If you want a game that makes you feel like a true commander, this is an easy recommendation.

EARLY ACCESS RATING: 8/10
